The MBT institute operates ~250m² of high-tech lab space in the 2016 inaugurated BioResearch Center of the FAU located at Ulrich-Schalk-Str.3 in Alterlangen, 8km west of the city center. The building hosts the three institutes of Medical Biotechnology (MBT), Biomaterials (WW7) and Endogneos Geodynamics.

The MBT labs are composed of PC1 and PC2 environments housing the malaria and microbial biotechnology groups as well as the critical high-end advanced imaging facilities that are in-built within the PC2 environment. Two multifocal multiphoton microscopy systems as well as widefield fluorescence research microscope are run here and available for the institute's own research groups and collaborations.

Large equipment at this facility within MBT includes:

  • 2 TriMScope II multifocal-multiphoton microscopes (upright, inverted) with Ti:Sa pulsed laser and OPO extension
  • 1 Nikon Eclipse inverted widefield fluorescence microscope for ultra-fast Ca2+ imaging (Sutter DG4 illumination)
  • 1 Nikon Eclipse inverted widefield fluorescence microscope with cell-culture long-term incubator environment (OkoLab)
  • Electrophysiology MultiClamp System
  • extended Cell Culture facilities including 3-way Hepa-filter cytostatics-approved biological safety hoods
  • gel electrophoresis, bioseparation and gel documentation systems (e.g. Vilber Fusion FX-7 system)
  • Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biotech wet lab space
  • ...
